With about four decades, seeing, hearing, reading, observing, experiencing, at times enduring, the dominant “academics” – be they lecturers or authors – I recognized the main difference between them and I as sub species aeternitatis versus sub species academia. Socrates, describe the same professors of philosophy as “sophists”. Hermann Hesse’s “Harry Haller” in his autobiographical Steppenwolf (1927) presented in fiction the same relation to scholars around him.
*in contrast to sub specie aeternitatis , I formulated: sub specie academiae, sub specie scientiae, sub specie mundi, to describe the world of intellect and academia as I found it, and “named” it.
