The revived interest in the writings and life of Melville in the 1920s did not help him very much in the 1890s.

“created equal”?
“created equal” is a(n historical) period’s rhetorical ideal… not at all some realistic foundation for assessing, ordering, understanding and/or guiding humans in a real societal life.
“Original sin” would at least pretend to that – though that has its meaning in a fully other Cosmos.
