What a slave holding a crown reminded conquerors in triumphs in Rome,… what popes in ceremony were reminded by the burning of flax,… what Thomas a Kempis in his Imitation warned to scholars: sic transit gloria mundi... these realities I was thrust into, without ideas, in the plane crash March 27, 1965.
And then later an innocent Christian unintentionally cast me towards the problems of meaning, suffering and theodicy by imagining to console by speaking of the Heavenly Father’s meaning to the deaths…

Ahh…one die!
Preparing for Rome…reading on Luther and Rome, I learned an obvious fact I had misunderstood all my life. “The die is cast” I had first and always understood to mean a material was set into a pattern, “cast”. But no, looking up iacta alea est I learn it means the dice are thrown! Hail, Caesar!
