Even only the introduction to Herbert Butterfield’s 1949 Christianity and History, plus my readiness now, allows me to recognize how journeys to Mount Sinai, or Jerusalem, or Rome, or Alexandria, or… are searching in the matters of history for Meaning and Sense that far transcends them.

This is not like searching in nature for God around Walden Pond, nor diving into the Self in Varanasi.

To how many is it not realized that an incidental, dabbling knowledge of history, social life, human nature, world events,…do not constitute an opinion, much less a view, worthy of being taken seriously.

Most I know in the South could hardly live with the death of God, which Friedrich Nietzsche is famous for having proclaimed. His “madman” would virtually necessarily be rejected in the soul-searching and social churches still today.

And, of course, Nietzsche lived the last 10 years of his life in silence.

Russians throughout the entire world should feel deep and profound shame. Those who don’t, are not worthy of boasting they are Russian.

Studying once again Augustine’s ideas of the Fall of Rome, and History, via a footnote reading in Butterfield’s 1949 Christianity and History, I just inwardly connected my life and experience and thoughts of “time” here in western North Carolina – not far from Pisgah National Forest as it happens – to the revelation on Mount Sinai.
